JD Wetherspoons are set to open their fourth pub in Dublin suburbs. The group currently has the Three Tun Tavern in Blackrock and two more on the way in Dun Laoghaire and Swords.
The pub will be located in the building that was formerly Light Nightclub. Previous names for the bar included West, and Heaven. Long term success on the site always seemed elusive.
The site itself is quite large. As a nightclub the site could probably hold one thousand people. The capacity of the future Werherspoons pub would be drastically lower than that, given that they’ll install tables everywhere.
Wetherspoons in the UK are known for being located in areas of convenience such as train stations and other public congregation points. Their purchase of Light, which is in a retail park of the Blanchardstown shopping centre, indicates that they plan to perhaps continue this UK policy of purchasing in areas that aren’t traditionally associated with pubs but do have high foot traffic.
We would have predicted that if Wetherspoons were to open anywhere in Blanchardstown, it would have been the old Greyhound pub in Blanchardstown village.
