In what can only be described as a herculean effort, Japanese man Yuya Abe is attempting to have a drink in every Dublin pub. We presume that this means around the city centre area. Yuya popped into our timelines twice in the last few days and piqued our interest in his quest.

He apparently is working out of a book called ‘The Dublin Pub Spotters Guide’ by Mac Maloney, which was published in recent years and lists all of the pubs in Dublin. Using this, he is making his way around the city trying to do something that plenty of Dubliners claim they have done, but don’t necessarily have the evidence of.

In each bar he goes into he has, it seems, a bit of a ritual. He will always have a pint of Guinness and he gets the barman to sign the entry in his book for that pub. An excellent way to document the trip.

Yuya in Slatterys

Yesterday he was in the Haddington road and Beggars Bush area, where he dropped into Slatterys and Smyths. These are the two that we know of, because they posted about him on their facebook pages. These were pubs 225 and 226 on his list in the 4 months since he started. By our count, there’s 751 pubs in the whole of Dublin, including all suburbs and county areas. It’s hard to say how many are in the city centre, as peoples definition can vary.

He got his 225th pint free in Slatterys, and we hope a lot more pubs will follow suit during his quest. That means that he’s bought 225 pints of Guinness, at an average of €4.70 per pint, meaning he has already spent around €1,057.50 on Guinness. Surely that’s worth plenty of freebies from the brewing giant?!

Best of luck to Yuya on the rest of his trip. If you see him, be sure to cheer him on, or maybe even buy him a pint.

Thanks to Joe Benkanoun and Mark Callaghan for sending us info on Yuya’s trip.
