Three Castle’s Burning is a new Dublin history podcast from historian Donal Fallon. Donal might be known to you for his several books, public talks, walking tours, or his work on the Come Here To Me blog.
Donal’s focus is primarily upon the social history of Dublin and its inhabitants. The first episode of the podcast was about the Bachelor’s Walk Massacre. Of chief interest to us is episode 2, which is a detailed historyo of Grogan’s Castle Lounge on South William Street.
The history of Grogan’s is intertwined with the history of literary and artistic Dublin. Donal goes into detail on how the South William Street area was once very different when the current incarnation of the pub took its form following a move by some of the staff over from McDaid’s pub.
There’s also a great explanation for the permanent and temporary art hanging on the walls of the pub, including the 2 stained glass artwork featuring the daytime and nighttime regulars.
We’re pretty sure Donal will dip into more history related to pubs in future episodes so it’s worth subscribing to.
